Senior Tax Clinic Program – Safeguarding Independence and Financial Security

Senior Tax Clinic Program – Safeguarding Independence and Financial Security

Through strategic collaboration and dedicated volunteer support, we successfully delivered 15 tax clinic sessions across various Carefirst sites and senior housing communities in Scarborough, Richmond Hill and Mississauga.

This program is designed to enhance access to safe, reliable, and fully electronic tax filing support for older adults, particularly those facing language, mobility, or financial barriers. In response to the rising concerns about financial abuse and fraud targeting seniors, the clinics also served as a critical platform for education, awareness, and prevention. Staff and volunteers remained attentive to potential risks, offering guidance and connecting individuals to appropriate supports when needed.

A team of wonderful volunteers

This spring, we reached a major milestone supporting over 600 seniors, ensuring accurate electronic tax filings and access to eligible benefits and credits. Equally important, the clinics provided a trusted and supportive environment that helped reduce vulnerability to scams and financial exploitation. The success of the program was made possible through robust partnerships with Chartered Professional Accountants Ontario (CPAO) and the Centre for Immigrant and Community Services (CICS). Their professional expertise strengthened service quality and our ability to support seniors with diverse needs. In addition, our 35 amazing trained volunteers played a vital role in providing assistance in service delivery. After completing structured training, volunteers assisted with electronic tax filing and supported seniors throughout the process, ensuring services were delivered safely, accurately, and efficiently. Beyond tax filing, the clinics also created opportunities to connect seniors with broader community resources, including income support programs, social services, and services that promote independence and well-being. These connections are essential in reducing isolation and supporting the prevention of elder abuse.

We extend our deepest gratitude to our partners and volunteers for strengthening the safety net for our seniors.
